Raise your hand if you’ve seen a bump in your energy bill over the summer months. Most people can expect to use more energy during the heat, but the Strittmatter team wants to make sure you are getting the most out of your AC unit and not unnecessarily wasting energy. Below are our top tips for keeping your energy bill under control through North Texas summers.
When it’s hot outside, it can be tempting to drop the temperature on your thermostat to 70 degrees and call it a day. But keeping your thermostat set at 78 degrees can use energy more effectively and save you from a skyrocketing bill. If you are used to keeping your home cooler, try raising the temperature one degree at a time over a few days. We bet by the time you get to 78 degrees, you will still be cool and comfortable (and saving money).
It’s like your parents used to tell you, we’re not air conditioning the whole neighborhood! Make sure you inspect your doors and windows for leaks. Caulking leaks and weather stripping doors and windows will make a big difference in keeping the cool air where you want it- inside!
Is your fan on the correct setting for summer? Make sure the blades are spinning in a counterclockwise direction to push cool air down to keep everyone comfortable. If your fans are spinning in the wrong direction, look for the switch on the fan to change the direction. And remember, fans work by evaporating the moisture on your skin. So while they won’t lower the temperature in a room, it can make you feel cooler.
Using other major appliances during the hottest part of the day can cause your AC to use a little extra energy to keep your home cool. Try running your washing machine and dishwasher in the evening when it cools off outside to save energy. You can also be aware of how you use your kitchen appliances. It’s a great excuse to fire up the grill on the patio instead of heating up the kitchen by using the oven and stove.
