Did you know that the hottest temperature ever recorded in Texas was 120 degrees? But most North Texas summer days sure can feel that hot! At Strittmatter, we want to make sure everyone stays safe in the sweltering temperatures of summer. Take a look at some of these tips and reminders to keep your whole family cool and safe this season.
Summer days are meant for hanging out at the pool and grilling out in the backyard. But remember to stay safe in the sun. Drink plenty of water and non-alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated. If you’re going to be outside, don’t forget the sunscreen! Apply a sunscreen that’s at least SPF 15 or higher every two hours or more. Nothing cramps summer style like a bright red sunburn! If possible, try to avoid outdoor activities at the hottest part of the day. But if you can’t resist the summer sun, take breaks in the shade and wear protective clothing.
When the sun goes down and it finally starts to cool off a little, reach for the bug spray! Mosquito bites aren’t just annoying, they can also be dangerous and spread disease like West Nile Virus. Apply a DEET bug repellant often and cover your arms and legs with clothing to avoid becoming a mosquito’s dinner.
Don’t forget about your furry friends! Pets need to stay hydrated, especially in the summer. Be sure to keep plenty of fresh water around for them to access during the day. If you have outdoor pets, consider bringing them inside during the hottest part of the day so they don’t get overheated.
If your dog is begging to go on a walk, be sure to check the pavement first. If it’s too hot for you to stand on barefoot, it’s too hot for your dog. Pavement that is too hot can burn their little paws! Opt for morning or evening walks instead or look for places that are grassy. If you plan to be out for longer than a few minutes, bring a small bottle and dish for water breaks for both of you!
And remember, never leave an animal inside of a car alone. It only takes a few minutes for temperatures to become dangerously hot, even with the windows cracked.
Your air conditioner will be working hard to keep you and your family cool all summer long. Be sure to regularly change your air filters to keep cool air moving freely inside your home.
No one wants to deal with a malfunctioning air conditioner during the heat of summer. But if you find yourself with a broken unit, call the Strittmatter SuperTechs! A hot home is not only uncomfortable, but it can be dangerous for young children and elderly adults. Our experts will work quickly to return your home back to a comfortable temperature.
