Spring is in the air! The days are getting longer and the temperatures are gradually starting to rise. It’s the perfect time to take a look around your home and start on some spring cleaning. At Strittmatter, we’re committed to going green whenever we can. Here are some tips to help get your house clean without using excess chemicals or energy.
Ditch the harsh chemicals and clean using more natural substances. These products work just as well as chemical cleaners, and you might already have them around your home. Here’s a list to get you started.
You can clean glass by mixing 1/4 vinegar with 1 quart of water. Use a squirt bottle to spray on and the newspapers to wipe off. Vinegar can be used to clean a ton of surfaces in your home. It can be used to disinfect by mixing 2 teaspoons of borax, 4 tablespoons of vinegar, 3 cups of hot water, and 1/4 teaspoon of liquid castile soap. Just spray it down and wipe it up.
You can also mix 4 cups of vinegar with a gallon of hot water to clean your floors. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and fill your home with a great scent the natural way.
Essential oils can also be used as an air freshener. Add a few drops on a cotton ball and stash it out of reach of kids and pets to make any room smell amazing.
You can also save energy and go green while cleaning your clothes. If you have clothes that need to be dry cleaned, skip traditional dry cleaners since they typically use an industrial solvent called Perchloroethylene which is toxic to humans and also pollutes the air. Instead, seek out a natural dry cleaners that doesn’t use harsh chemicals.
If you’re doing laundry at home, spring is the perfect time to dry your clothes naturally. Use a drying rack or set up some drying lines outside to save the energy you would have used with a traditional dryer.
Did you know that the air in your home can be more polluted than outside air? Taking care of your indoor air quality can reduce allergies and respiratory problems.
What are some things you can do to help your indoor air quality? Drop your shoes at the door when you get home. Taking off your shoes reduces the amount of chemicals and dirt you bring into your home and stops them from spreading all over the house. Setting up a “shoe station” by the door will keep your entryways free of clutter and your home free of excess toxins.
Keeping plants in your home will also help clean the air naturally. Also, opening a window to let some fresh air in will create circulation to prevent noxious vapors from building up inside the home.
The best place to start is by getting your indoor air quality evaluated. Strittmatter can clean coils and compressors as well as checking to make sure everything is sealed properly to keep you and your family breathing easier.
