The sun is shining, the vacations are planned, and the air conditioner is running full blast. It’s officially summer in North Texas. While you’re enjoying the warm weather, the Strittmatter team wants to make sure you do so safely. We’ve rounded up our top safety tips to help you and your family have the best summer possible!
Sunscreen should always be your first line of defense when it comes to protecting yourself against the sun’s harmful rays. Use a sunscreen that contains SPF 15 or higher and apply it 30 minutes before going outside. Most people underestimate how often they should reapply sunscreen, so remember to reapply every two hours that you are still in the sun.
The sun’s rays can also bounce off of water and sand, hitting exposed skin. So in addition to sunscreen, add a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing to prevent sun damage. And remember, you can still get sunburned on a cloudy day! So make skin protection a routine part of your summer days.
Make sure to apply a liberal amount of bug spray when spending time outdoors. The most effective bug sprays will contain DEET, which will protect you from disease-carrying insects. If you’re using these products on children, make sure not to spray their faces or hands to prevent accidental ingestion. And always consult your doctor about the safest bug sprays to use on small children.
Hot days in the sun mean you should be drinking more water! Everyone’s body is different. But a good rule of thumb is to take your weight (in pounds), divide it by two, and drink that many ounces of water each day. It’s important to listen to your body’s thirst signals, especially if you’re spending time out in the heat. So grab a fun water bottle and keep it nearby this summer!
Water safety is an important part of summer. The American Red Cross lists detailed safety information here. Take a moment to sit down with your family to go over water safety and what to do if there’s an emergency.
We know vacations are exciting! But remember to not post on public social media that your home will be unattended for days at a time. Ask a friend or neighbor to stop by a few times while you are out of town to make sure pets are cared for and mail is brought inside.
